Spreading an early intervention for eating disorders

First Episode Rapid Early Intervention for Eating Disorders (FREED) is an evidence-based early intervention for eating disorders designed to give 16 to 25-year-olds rapid access to specialised treatment and support. FREED was supported by the AHSN Network as a national spread programme until March 2023.

The South West AHSN has worked with eating disorder services in Somerset, Devon and Cornwall to support implementation of FREED across the region. Our support has included funding for two FREED champion roles to launch FREED services in Devon.

We convened and facilitated a monthly community of practice for FREED champions in Somerset, Devon and Cornwall to access peer support, share learning and collaborate. All four eating disorder services were offered advice and guidance from our evaluation and learning team to design a service evaluation, with two services presenting their findings at a national FREED shared learning event in March 2023.

The FREED model is now offered by all eating disorder services in Somerset, Devon and Cornwall.

Since July 2020:

  • 282 people have been referred to FREED services in the region
  • 253 people were accepted onto the FREED pathway
  • 132 people received evidence-based treatment for their eating disorder within 4 weeks of referral
