First NHS frontline staff graduate with improvement projects for region
More than 80 people who work in our healthcare system in the South West graduated from the region’s first accelerated Patient Safety Officer Training. The course kickstarted more than 20 improvement projects in Devon, Cornwall and Somerset.
The training was delivered by the world-leading Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) and was hosted by the South West Academic Health Science Network at Dartington Hall in Totnes.
Every delegate completed the full course and the group included a good mix of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, commissioners, analysts, managers, and a patient.
100% of delegates rated the course as ‘excellent’ in feedback and said unanimously that they believed it had improved their ability to lead change.
Trainer Carol Haraden who is Vice President of the Institute of Healthcare Improvement said:
‘The teams were inquisitive, smart and hardworking. It excites me that this course creates a real opportunity not just to support individuals but to speed up improvement and good working across a whole system.’
Amelia Brooks, Patient Safety Programme Manager for the South West Academic Health Science Network said: ‘We have been given responsibility by NHS England to improve patient safety in the region by creating a collaborative which will pull together all of the excellent work which happens in our healthcare system. We know that frontline NHS staff here are committed to their patients and we want to give them the best support possible. What could be better than bringing the world experts in healthcare improvement into our region? Doing this meant many people could benefit from their expertise and share it with their colleagues.’

Following the training, members of the core team at the South West Academic Health Science Network will visit the delegates at their organisations in the coming six weeks to help them further develop and roll out their improvement projects.
There will also be an opportunity to take part in a safety culture survey for the region.
The Network and IHI hope to team up again later in the year to offer further training and a reunion for graduates.
