Members of the public and patients in the South West brought together to discuss the 100,000 Genomes Project

On 03 November we held a Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) event for the 100,000 Genomes Project. Over 30 people came together in Exeter to explore topics such as genomics education, access to genomics data, and solutions on how to handle unexpected findings when sequencing a person’s genome.

The guest speaker was Vivienne Parry, Head of Engagement at Genomics England.  Vivienne who is leading communication and engagement for the 100,000 Genomes project gave a lively presentation to the South West PPI group.

Also in attendance was Derek Sprague, Local and Education Training Boards Director, Health Education South West and Professor Sian Ellard, Clinical Programme Director, South West NHS Genomic Medicine Centre.

Sian Ellard said: “We really enjoyed hearing about the latest developments and are delighted to see the creation of such a varied set of resources to help with public and patient engagement. The meeting had a very positive and constructive vibe that we will endeavour to take forward.”

94% of attendees felt the workshop was useful and several PPI members described the event as “thought provoking”.  People who attended also felt that the project was making useful progress and feel excited about the developments to come.
