Third round of Patient Safety Officer training delivered to Healthcare staff in the South West
Last week the South West Academic Health Science Network and the South West Patient Safety Collaborative (SW PSC) brought together over 80 healthcare professionals from the region to be trained by the world-leading experts in healthcare improvement. The Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI) were funded by the SW AHSN and the SW PSC to deliver the Patient Safety Officer (PSO) training to delegates free of charge.
The PSO course, which ran from 16-20 May is an accelerated course created to give health and care teams the knowledge and skills to deliver high quality care for patients. Senior leaders for the individuals and teams took part in a one day executive programme designed to equip them with the skills needed to support their teams with their improvement projects on returning to the workplace.
Delegates tweeted enthusiastically throughout the week as they learned and participated in a wide variety of interactive workshop sessions. The sessions explored minimising mistakes with psychological safety within a healthcare setting; learning from aviation safety experts, and a session with GPs looking at how to inform the approach to safety and culture within primary care. The week culminated in a ‘graduation ceremony’ for the participants.
William Lilley, Programme Manager – Patient Safety, SW AHSN said: “The PSO training was an amazing opportunity for our region’s healthcare professionals to spend time with others learning about how to implement real change in patient safety. We received such excellent feedback from those who attended and we know everyone who attended the course will be able to draw on their learning to help enhance patient safety in the South West.”
The SW AHSN aims to improve and sustain the healthcare system in Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly and Somerset for current and future generations of patients, while prioritising on finding solutions for problems which affect the largest numbers of patients and put the greatest stress on our healthcare system in the South West. It runs a wide range of events which help give an insight into the skills and practical tools needed to run quality improvement projects.
