Funding offer launched for innovations to help patient flow and children’s care

Companies are being invited to bid for funding to develop solutions to improve patient flow in acute care and independence for children with long-term conditions in the latest competition from SBRI Healthcare which launched on 08 June.

SBRI Healthcare is run by AHSNs and funded by NHS England to develop innovative products and services that address unmet health needs. Successful companies can receive up to £100,000 phase 1 feasibility funding each to develop products that improve patient flow in acute care, and self-care options for children with long-term conditions.

Philippa Hedley-Takhar, Head of Investment and Partnerships for Yorkshire and Humber AHSN, commenting on the competition for self-care and independence for children with long-term conditions: “We know that disability in children can have a permanent effect on their life skills in adulthood. With six percent of children in the UK living with disability, there is a high need for innovations that address their health and care needs, so they can live life to the full. This will enhance their wellbeing and confidence but, over the longer term, will enable them to take advantage of greater opportunities as they move towards and through adulthood.”

Anna King, Commercial Director of Health Innovation Network, commenting on the competition for managing patient flow in acute care: “When a person’s health needs are complex they often need to interact with different departments and different care processes which can feel like they are bouncing around the system. This isn’t good for patients and it isn’t efficient for the NHS, as it often results in duplication, waste and other inefficiencies. So we are looking for companies with innovations that can help us to improve efficiencies through better use of resources, reduced wastage and delays, and improved processes. This will save money for the NHS but, crucially, will improve the experience and outcomes for patients.”

This competition is being supported by Yorkshire and Humber AHSN, West of England AHSN, Imperial College Health Partners, and Health Innovation Network but applications are invited from across England. Briefing events with clinicians for interested companies will take place in Leeds on 22 June and in London 21 June.

The deadline for applications is 28 July and details are available on the SBRI Healthcare website.
