Quality Improvement in Action in the South West
On 29 June 2016, 120 multidisciplinary healthcare professionals came together from across the South West region to Taunton School for the free-of-charge Quality Improvement in Action Conference.
The conference, which was funded by the South West Academic Health Science Network (SW AHSN) and West of England Academic Health Science Network (WE AHSN) saw junior and senior doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and patients come together to present and share the great quality improvement (QI) work they are doing.
Exhibitors at the conference included; BMJ Quality & Safety, Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership, NHS Library Services, Quality Improvement Clinic and Health Care Videos.
Delegates were given the opportunity to hear from expert speakers about: QI in the NHS, Safety Culture in the NHS, Patient Experience & QI, How not to jump to solutions, Embedding QI at grassroots and Co-production with patients.
Over 90 abstracts were submitted with 43 of them being turned into posters and ten of them being presented verbally by the delegates.
Tim Schrire won first prize for his poster on ‘Management of Corneal Foreign Body in the Emergency Department’ and Robert Hair won second prize for his poster titled ‘Improving gentamicin prescribing in line with local trust guidelines’.
The first prize for oral presentations went to Sarah Oram and Laura Munglani for their work on ‘Treatment Escalation Plan: Design and Implementation using Quality Improvement Methodology’.
With second prize going to Suzy Connor for her work on improving paediatric analgesia in the emergency department.
