The South of England Mental Health Quality and Patient Safety Improvement Collaborative: Learning Session 10
On Tuesday 05 and Wednesday 06 July, The South of England Mental Health Quality and Safety Improvement Collaborative brought together health and care professionals from Mental Health trusts across the South of England for a learning session in Bristol.
The collaborative, which is part-funded by the South West AHSN, Oxford AHSN, Wessex AHSN and West of England AHSN has a purpose of making care safer by improving quality in mental healthcare.
The collaborative aims to achieve this by:
• Supporting organisations to develop a safety culture and to become a system for learning;
• Build the quality improvement capability in members, supporting them from being learners of quality improvement to becoming leaders of quality improvement;
• Develop the capacity and capability for co-production in quality improvement work of participating organisations;
• Use the Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Break through Series Methodology learning system;
• Reduce variation in clinical practices and aim for 95% reliability in care processes;
• Create a network that uses measurement only for improvement and learning, and uses the model for improvement to develop test and spread new or existing, alongside local and national innovation;
The two-day learning event allowed participants to gain knowledge, receive coaching, develop practical skills and share best practice in:
• The Model for Improvement
• The Implementation of Plan Do Study Act (PDSA) cycle
• Measurement for improvement
• Development for measurement strategy
• Implementing quality improvement (QI) projects
• The SCORE Cultural Assessment tool
• Coaching in the application of QI
• Work Stream focused support
• Take away innovations for testing
• Networking with peers
• Share learning across multiple organisations
Delegates heard from a wide range of speakers and were also given the opportunity to showcase their own QI work on story boards.
Dr Matt Hill, Consultant Anaesthetist, Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust and Patient Safety Regional Lead, South West AHSN said: “The South of England Mental Health Quality and Patient Safety Improvement Collaborative learning sessions are a great opportunity for health and care professionals in the region to learn, develop and share best practice. They create a forum for continuous learning and improvement, which is of great benefit to the individuals, teams, and the patients they care for. The energy and enthusiasm that teams bring to the collaborative really reinvigorates the continuous drive to improve the care that we deliver. We are looking forward to delivering the next one in November.”
