Our Safety Culture Improvement Lead Joanna Pendray talks about the launch of the Maternal and Neonatal Health Safety Collaborative on 28 February and what it means for those involved in maternal and neonatal care.
“The launch event of the Maternal and Neonatal Health Safety Collaborative on 28 February was the start of a three-year programme to reduce the rates of maternal deaths, stillbirths, neonatal deaths and brain injuries that occur during or soon after birth by 20% by 2020 and 50% by 2030. The collaborative is the largest of its’ type in the world.
Our clinical lead Matt Hill, Gemma Crossingham (both Consultant Anaesthetists) and I were delighted to be running three workshops on safety culture during the day – these were well attended by 60 delegates in each workshop. Delegates had the opportunity to learn more about the importance of understanding safety culture and to discuss their perception of the culture in their own teams. The workshops generated lots of lively discussion and questions about how to take the work forward.
This national ambition requires all NHS trusts (plus independent providers) who provide maternity services in England to make measurable improvements in safety outcomes for women, their babies and families by exchanging ideas and best practice. Delegates heard from a variety of national and international figures including Dr Mike Durkin, National Director of Patient Safety, Professor Cathy Warwick, CEO of the Royal College of Midwives, Dr Tony Kelly, National Clinical Director for the Collaborative and Phil Duncan Programme Director for the Collaborative, experts in improvement from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement in the US and the Secretary of State for Health, the Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt, who is looking forward to seeing the spread of some great clinical practice.”
