South West Academic Health Science Network and Patient Safety Collaborative hold second in the series of Patient Safety Launch Pad sessions
The Patient Safety Collaborative at the South West Academic Health Science Network (SW AHSN) has held the second in a series of Patient Safety Launch Pad sessions, on 18 and 19 September 2017 at St Mellion Cornwall. The successful course was attended by 87 health and care professionals from across the South West.
The Patient Safety Launch Pad is a five-day programme, spread across nine months and is a bespoke version of the SW AHSN’s successful Accelerated Patient Safety Programme, with the first two days having been held in Exeter in May 2017. It has been designed to support delegates in implementing a patient safety and quality improvement (QI) plan at ward, unit, hospital or system level. It is being delivered by a team of leading QI experts from across the region and UK and is free of charge to delegates within the South West.
Days three and four of the Patient Safety Launch Pad were hosted by SW AHSN Patient Safety Officer William Lilley and patient safety expert Jonathan Broad. Delegates heard from a range of QI and patient safety experts including Matt Hill, Gemma Crossingham, Annette Rickard, Cath Ward and Alistair Lockwood. Delegates also participated in a variety of engaging teamwork activities to strengthen learning and were given introductions into Appreciative Inquiry, Learning from Excellence, SCORE/Safer Culture, debriefing, Human Factors and Ergonomics.
Some delegates also shared presentations on their project progressions. Day four closed with a session on the ‘Power of Storytelling’, with delegates getting to experience a situation through patient’s eyes via a virtual reality headset which Health and Care Videos brought along.
The Patient Safety Launch Pad enables participants to use the Life QI system, to use a safety culture survey, as well as providing ongoing mentoring and coaching between learning sessions.
The final one-day session will be on 30 January 2018 at Monks Yard, Somerset.
