PERIPrem in the running for two HSJ awards

Perinatal Excellence to Reduce Injury in Premature Birth (PERIPrem) has been announced as a finalist for the Pilot Project of the Year at the prestigious HSJ Patient Safety Award 2021. In addition, the project has been shortlisted for the Provider Collaboration of the Year at the main HSJ Awards 2021.

This recognition demonstrates the importance of the project, and the huge benefits that are being seen already in the lives of babies and their mothers in the test areas.

The PERIPrem project, launced in 2020, aims to reduce brain injury and death caused by preterm birth by at least half. It comprises a bundle of 11 interventions, including delayed cord clamping, early breast milk and prophylactic hydrocortisone. These interventions can have a significant impact on brain injury and mortality rates amongst babies born prematurely.

Designed and delivered in partnership with 12 NHS trusts in the South West AHSN region and that of our partner, West of England AHSN, together with parent partners and clinical experts; PERIPrem is optimising care by bringing all partners involved in preterm care together to redesign systems at regional level. This has included designing a quality improvement (QI) data tool, establishing a perinatal clinical collaborative, and putting parent partners at the heart of the project.

“This is such a positive collaboration with families across an amazing regional team of 12 Trusts, the South West Neonatal Network and our colleagues in the West of England AHSN.” Sally Hedge, Programme Manager, South West AHSN.

More than 370 babies born before 34 weeks have been cared for under PERIPrem so far, and 1,100 sets of resources have been downloaded from the website. The regional clinical passport has been translated into the top eight locally used languages, so that more families with at-risk infants can be supported.

“Perinatal services across the South West have worked with great passion to implement the PERIPRrem Project in order to support improved outcomes and experiences for infants and families who journey through neonatal services. It’s wonderful to see their hard work and achievements being celebrated nationally through the shortlisting of the project as a HSJ Award Finalist. We are so proud to be part of a team of such dedicated, caring professionals.” Mary Leighton, Network Manager, South West Neonatal Operational Delivery Network.

Recognition from the HSJ for this programme, whether it is ultimately the winner or not, will cement the benefits of the programme for those considering implementing it in their own areas.

The HSJ Patient Safety Awards will be presented at the ceremony in Manchester Central, on 20 September 2021. The main HSJ awards will be presented at Evolution, London on 18 November 2021.
