PERIPrem – Highly commended at the HSJ Patient Safety Awards
Perinatal Excellence to Reduce Injury in Premature Birth (PERIPrem) was launched in 2020, and aims to reduce brain injury and death caused by preterm birth by at least half. It comprises a bundle of 11 interventions, including delayed cord clamping, early breast milk and prophylactic hydrocortisone. These interventions can have a significant impact on brain injury and mortality rates amongst babies born before 34 weeks.
PERIPrem was designed and delivered in partnership with 12 NHS trusts in the South West AHSN region and that of our partner, West of England AHSN, together with parent partners and clinical experts. The project is optimising care by bringing all partners involved in preterm care together to redesign systems at regional level. This has included designing a quality improvement (QI) data tool, establishing a perinatal clinical collaborative, and putting parent partners at the heart of the project.
Rebecca Whitting, Programme Director – Clinical and Patient Safety Collaborative Lead at the South West AHSN said,
“We are delighted that PERIPrem has received recognition in the HSJ Patient Safety awards, a huge accolade for the entire team which has been involved. This project is already having an impact in our region and West of England, with 370 babies to date treated under its protocols. Well done to all who have worked so hard to ensure PERIPrem’s success.”
Congratulations to all the highly commended and winning innovations, and the SW AHSN Members and partners involved in them.
