SW AHSN Hosts Workshop to Find Solutions to Indemnity Issues within Primary Care across the South West

On 29 November the SW AHSN ran a free workshop – ‘Indemnity – Finding a Solution’, led by Dr David Geddes, Head of Primary Care Commissioning, NHS England and Keira Liburd, Assistant Head of Primary Care, Quality and Regulation – Interim, NHS England.

One of the key concerns within general practice in recent years is the ongoing rise in the costs of indemnity. It is recognised in the South West that all practitioners working in general practice are impacted by the cost and availability of indemnity cover to support emerging new models of care. Finding a region-wide solution was raised at the Community Education Provider Networks and identified as an objective by the South West Regional Board for Primary Care Workforce Sustainability.

The SW AHSN brought together 50 delegates including; GPs, practice managers, practice nurses and staff from out of hours’ providers, clinical commissioning groups, GP federations, alliances and CICs with representatives from the an insurance broker and the Medical Defence Organisations, to work together to scope alternative solutions to the indemnity issue in the South West region.

A revised specification which reflects a new approach to the provision of indemnity is currently in development.
