Detailed Programme Information
The South West AHSN worked with NHS Kernow Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) to develop a series of training videos to provide tips, advice and guidance for GPs based in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, and beyond.
The videos support GPs’ direct work with children, young people and their families, as well as providing resources and help with referrals to specialist mental health teams and other agencies supporting children’s wellbeing.
The videos were created prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, but children and young people’s mental health is more relevant now than ever. National and local data indicates that mental health problems among children and young people – including anxiety, self-harm, depression and eating disorders – have increased markedly as a consequence of COVID-19 and the associated restrictions. In an autumn 2020 survey of over 2000 young people by mental health charity, Young Minds, 80% of respondents agreed that the pandemic had made their mental health worse.
Turning the Tide
NHS Kernow CCG worked with health, education, social care and the voluntary sector to plan and deliver Turning the Tide – a plan for improved community and specialist services for children, young people and their families.
Guided by the NHS long-term plan, the aim of this project is to break down barriers between services, aiming to ensure an integrated mental health system where help is available to children, young people and families when needed.
Key to Turning the Tide is the voice of young people who contribute to these videos and helped shape the transformation plan in Cornwall.
